Primary School

The national school in Newtownforbes is Scoil Mhuire.

Scoil Mhuire is a vertical and co-educational primary school, located in the village of Newtownforbes near Longford town. The school has been accommodated on the current site since 1961 and it has been extended and refurbished in recent years to facilitate an amalgamation and increasing enrolments. Scoil Mhuire has an administrative principal, eleven mainstream class teachers and a special education team of three teachers. The school also employs the services of one full-time and one part-time special needs assistants, two classroom assistants, a part-time secretary, a caretaker and a cleaner. In recent years enrolments in the school have increased substantially and the present enrolment includes pupils from the Travelling community and pupils for whom English is not their first language. At the time of the evaluation, there were 287 pupils on the rolls.

The school seeks to promote partnership with parents and the local community. Parents support the work of the school through helping their pupils with Science projects and through financial support for resource acquisition, expert visitors to the school and transport for Science trips. In recent years the school has been very successful at regional level in the ESB Environmental Awards, achieving recognition for the school fountain and the Millennium feature. The school’s success in achieving the Green Flag testifies to the collaboration of teachers, pupils, board of management, ancillary staff and parents in maintaining and improving the school’s environment. A representative from Longford County Council has provided the school with support and guidance with regard to environmental awareness and care. Since there is no parents’ association in the school at present, the parents’ representatives on the board of management discuss draft policies and suggest amendments on behalf of the parents.  The newly elected board of management plans to address the re-establishment of a parents’ association as a matter of priority.

The school is located on the eastern end of the village just off the N4 and close to Clonguish GAA grounds.
